      Paryavaran Overview

      • Home

      Paryavaran Gatividhi

The environment includes everything around us, including air, water, soil, plants, animals, microorganisms, and climate. It functions as a complex life-support system in which living and non-living components interact continuously to sustain life on Earth. A healthy environment is important not only for human survival but also for economic development, social well-being, and ecological stability.

      Environment provides humanity:

      • Environment provides humanity with a wide range of essential services which are often taken for granted. These include the provision of food and freshwater through agriculture, forests, and aquatic systems. It also provides clean air and climate regulation maintained by forests and oceans. The environment supports soil fertility and nutrient cycling, which are crucial for agricultural productivity. It also offers medicinal resources, genetic diversity, and numerous cultural, aesthetic, and recreational benefits. Together, these services form the foundation of human civilization and sustainable development.

      • However, unplanned urbanization, rapid industrial growth, increasing population pressure, and the overexploitation of natural resources have led to serious environmental challenges. Among these, climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing global concerns. Climate change is primarily driven by excessive emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the burning of fossil fuels and widespread deforestation. Its impacts are evident in rising global temperatures, frequent extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and growing threats to agriculture, human health, and biodiversity.

      • Another major concern is the loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity refers to the vast variety of plants, animals, and microorganisms that inhabit the Earth. Habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation have significantly accelerated the rate of species extinction. Biodiversity is essential as it maintains ecological balance, supports food security and medicine, and enhances ecosystem resilience. The loss of species weakens ecosystems and reduces their ability to adapt to environmental changes.

      • The world is also facing a severe water crisis. Freshwater resources are shrinking due to overuse, pollution, and climate variability. Groundwater depletion, polluted rivers and lakes, and unequal access to safe drinking water are major challenges affecting millions of people. Effective water conservation and sustainable management are critical to ensuring water security for future generations.

      • Plastic pollution has become another alarming environmental issue. Plastics are non-biodegradable and persist in the environment for hundreds of years. They cause severe harm to marine and terrestrial life. Plastic materials break down into microplastics that enter food chains, and contaminate soil and water. Reducing single-use plastics and promoting eco-friendly alternatives are essential steps toward addressing this crisis.

      • Pollution in its various forms further degrades environmental quality. Air pollution, caused by vehicles, factories, and burning of fuels, leads to respiratory diseases and contributes to climate change. Water pollution results from sewage discharge, industrial waste, and agricultural runoff, which harms aquatic ecosystems and human health. Soil pollution, arising from pesticides, heavy metals, and solid waste, reduces soil fertility and threatens food safety.

      • In the present-day scenario, environmental conservation is of utmost importance. It ensures the survival of life-support systems, maintains ecological balance and climate stability. It also promotes sustainable development, and secures a healthy planet for future generations. Protecting nature is not merely a choice but a collective responsibility.

      • Plantation and increased green cover play a vital role in environmental conservation. Trees and green covering act as natural protectors by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Trees purify air, regulating temperature, prevent soil erosion and floods, and provide habitats for wildlife. Green patches also contribute to improved mental and physical health in human populations. Planting native and climate-resilient species is especially important for enhancing long-term ecological sustainability.

Role of Bharat Vikas Parishad in Environmental Conservation:

      • Bharat Vikas Parishad is actively contributing to environmental conservation through a range of community-driven, sustainable initiatives. Recognizing the critical role of green cover in climate mitigation, the organization conducts large-scale plantation drives during the monsoon season, ensuring higher survival rates of saplings and long-term ecological benefits. To address the growing menace of plastic pollution, Bharat Vikas Parishad promotes the reduction of single-use plastics by encouraging the use of eco-friendly cloth bags and actively supports the Beat Plastic Pollution movement. Water conservation is another key focus area, with awareness initiatives aimed at responsible water use and protection of freshwater resources. The Parishad also organizes environmental awareness programs in schools and colleges to instill scientific temperament, environmental ethics, and sustainable lifestyle practices among students. In addition, plantation and distribution of medicinal plants help conserve traditional knowledge, promote biodiversity, and enhance community health. Through these integrated efforts, Bharat Vikas Parishad plays a significant role in fostering environmental stewardship and sustainable development at the grassroots level.
